Wildfire Status:
The Black Canyon Fire, which was first reported on August 10, 2024, is currently burning on private and state trust land approximately 30 miles northwest of White Sulphur Springs, Montana. As of August 19, the fire has reached a size of 233 acres and is fully contained, with 100% of its perimeter secured. The fire is primarily affecting heavy timber and has been managed by the Montana DNRC County Assist Team, which will transition command back to the Meagher County Fire Department on August 20 to ensure ongoing monitoring.
In terms of response efforts, a total of 118 personnel have been deployed to manage the fire. The teams are currently in patrol status, focusing on holding and improving firelines, conducting mop-up operations, and demobilizing excess resources. Firefighters are engaged in cold trailing and backhauling equipment, ensuring that the area remains secure and that any smoldering hot spots are adequately addressed.
Weather conditions in the area are a concern, as warm temperatures are anticipated along with the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. Strong winds and lightning are expected, which could pose additional risks to the already managed fire area.
