On August 31st, a lightning storm ignited 31 fires across the Kootenai National Forest. Firefighting resources, (engines and hand crew modules) responded to these fires throughout the evening of Aug 31st and in the morning on September 1st. 10 lightning fires were ignited on the Cabinet Ranger District including the Isabella, Moran, and Lost Girl Fires which started in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness. Kootenai Rappelers were inserted into the Lost Girl fire on the evening of the August 31st. Active fire behavior combined with difficult access and extremely steep and cliffy terrain compromised the safety of firefighters during this initial suppression efforts and firefighters disengaged ground operation. A Type 5 Incident Commander has taken command of the fires. There are currently no immediate concerns to private infrastructure.
