Quartz Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Quartz Fire was detected in Glacier National Park on August 14 and has since grown to over 1900 acres. The fire is located west of the Continental Divide in the Quartz Creek drainage below Vulture Peak, burning in steep terrain in subalpine fir and brush south of Quartz Lake. The fire received rain in late August, limiting its activity and growth. However, fire behavior increased with a cold front passage on September 7, resulting in uphill runs and tree torching. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity levels on September 8 helped to reduce fire activity.
Aerial observations show a mixed severity burn pattern within the fire perimeter, with areas burning at different intensities. Some understory burning occurred in less intense areas, while higher burn intensity areas saw mature trees burned. With the arrival of seasonal fall conditions, fire activity has been minimal, and no significant changes are expected until snow cover extinguishes the remaining smokes. Glacier National Park Fire Staff will continue monitoring weather and fire behavior until the fires are declared out. The current containment of the fire stands at 0%, with planned actions focused on evaluating fire spread and values at risk.
