Muir Creek Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Muir Creek Fire, reported on the evening of July 23, 2024, is burning in a remote area of southern Glacier National Park, approximately 4 miles east of US Highway 2 and the Pinnacle community. As of August 2, the fire has grown to approximately 30 acres, and there remains 0% containment. Initial firefighting efforts included helicopter water drops and the deployment of rappelers, but fire activity increased rapidly, necessitating ongoing suppression measures.
Currently, 32 personnel are actively engaged in managing the situation. The fire is burning in timber with heavy dead and down fuel components, complicated by steep, rocky terrain and low moisture levels in the fuel. Planned actions include continuous monitoring of fire activity, assessing structure protection needs, and performing fuel reduction around high-risk areas.
Weather conditions are a concern as a warm ridge is establishing itself, leading to increasing temperatures and drier relative humidity as the weekend approaches. This could potentially exacerbate fire activity, making the ongoing management and monitoring crucial for the safety of the surrounding areas and resources.
