North Fork Fire has burned 40 acres, burning 10 miles southwest of Hamilton.
Latest update
The North Fork Lost Horse Fire started July 24, 2026 at 8:26 p.m. caused by a lightning strike after several thunderstorm cells passed through the area. This fire is in steep, rocky terrain on the top 1/3 of an 8,000-foot slope.
Fire activity increased July 25 due to extreme heat, low relative humidities and wind gusts exceeding 40 mph along. Three helicopters performed bucket drops throughout the day to reduce the fire's spread.
Fire activity held at 40 acres on the North Fork Lost Horse Fire during evening hours of July 25 and into the morning of July 26. Decreased winds, lower temperatures and higher relative humidities helped keep the fire at bay. There was little fire activity at the top of the ridge but there was some roll out down the canyon with the fire flanking east.
The North Fork Lost Horse Fire has transitioned to a Type 3 incident management team - a mid‑level team that handles moderate‑complexity incidents.
A helicopter, heavy equipment, water tenders, fire engines and a hotshot crew are ordered.
Four engines, 2 water tenders and a suppression module area on scene.
Temperatures will be 82 to 87 degrees today with westerly winds 8 to 12 mph.
A blanket of smoke has filtered into the Bitterroot Valley from Oregon and regional fires.
As of July 26, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., an IR (Infrared) reconnaissance flight mapped the fire at 105 acres picking up all the outlying hotspots.
More resources, such as heavy equipment, are arriving into the area.
Lost Horse Road will be closed July 27 at the Lick Creek and Lost Horse Road junction due to fire activity and resources responding.
