Wildfire Status:

The Grouse wildfire, located approximately ten miles southwest of Wise River, Montana, has been actively burning since July 25, 2024. As of the latest update on October 17, 2024, the fire has consumed an area of about 6,228 acres and is being managed by the B-D Fire Staff. The incident remains active, with a total of ten personnel currently engaged in firefighting efforts. The cause of the fire is attributed to lightning, and it has primarily affected subalpine fir and heavy timber, along with large quantities of dead and downed fuels.

In terms of fire response, recent weather conditions have been favorable, as the area has experienced precipitation which has helped to reduce the fire's intensity. However, some larger fuels may continue to smolder, resulting in small amounts of visible smoke. Firefighters are focusing their efforts on monitoring residual heat along the fire perimeter and are working to ensure that the fire remains contained to the north of Pettingill Creek. It's important to note that the forest service has rescinded previous road and trail closures, indicating improved conditions in the area.

Despite the progress made, the aftermath of the fire presents safety hazards, including unstable soils and weakened trees. Authorities are urging recreationists and hunters to avoid the fire area for their safety and the safety of the firefighting personnel. As the situation continues to evolve, fire agencies remain vigilant in their efforts to manage the fire and mitigate any potential risks associated with the burned landscape.
