Wildfire Status:

The Grouse Wildfire, located approximately ten miles southwest of Wise River, Montana, has currently burned across 6,009 acres, with 50% of its perimeter contained. The incident, which began on July 25, 2024, is being managed by Incident Commander Tim Etienne and involves a total of 13 personnel. The fire primarily affects subalpine fir, heavy timber, and large amounts of dead and down fuels, which have contributed to its spread.

In response to the fire, fire agencies have implemented various suppression strategies and are actively monitoring the perimeter. Recently, they have begun rehabilitation of existing suppression lines as part of their efforts to control the fire. A significant development is the rescinding of the trail and road closure order, allowing public access to some areas while still urging recreationists and hunters to avoid the fire-affected zones for safety reasons.

Weather conditions are becoming more favorable for fire suppression efforts, with cooler temperatures and increased moisture expected over the coming days. Current forecasts predict daytime temperatures in the 60s and nighttime lows in the 30s, along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. These conditions are anticipated to limit fire activity primarily to creeping and smoldering, although smoke may still be visible at times. Firefighters will continue to assess and manage the situation as they work towards full containment of the blaze.
