Surprise Fire (IDNCF)

Wildfire Status:

The Surprise Fire, discovered on August 22, 2024, is currently burning in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, located near the Idaho/Montana border. This lightning-caused wildfire has grown to encompass approximately 763 acres and is primarily affecting subalpine fir vegetation. Fire agencies have not been able to staff the fire due to higher priority incidents in the region, which has limited the immediate response to this fire.

Current weather conditions are a significant concern for firefighting efforts. Blustery west winds are expected to persist, coupled with dry conditions lasting through early next week. The humidity levels at night are anticipated to remain low, which could exacerbate fire behavior.
