Wildfire Status:
The Moose Creek Complex, which includes the Wye Fire, Halfway Fire, Monument Fire, and Log Fire, is currently active in the region. The Wye Fire, detected on July 25, 2024, has grown to approximately 12,857 acres and is predominantly burning in an area that experienced a fire in 2015. It is located about four and a half miles northwest of Freeman Peak. The Halfway Fire, identified on August 25, covers around 1,365 acres, while the Monument Fire, detected on August 19, spans about 543 acres. The Log Fire, the smallest of the group, is currently only 5 acres in size. Trail closures are in effect around the Moose Creek Complex area to ensure public safety.
Fire agencies are actively managing the situation, with a total of 13 personnel currently assigned to the Moose Creek Complex. The incident is being overseen by the Moose Creek Ranger District Fire Management. Planned actions include structure protection for significant locations like the East Moose Bridge and the Moose Creek Ranger Station. Fire behavior has been noted as moderate to high at times, with potential increases in activity expected due to the forecasted hotter and drier conditions. The incident has an estimated containment date of December 31, 2024.
Weather conditions are a critical factor in the firefighting efforts. The current situation indicates heavy dead and down fuels from previous wildfires, contributing to the fire's spread. Smoke from the fires may drift toward the Bitterroot Valley, affecting air quality in the surrounding areas. As firefighting efforts continue, the public is advised to stay informed about the latest conditions and any further trail closures that may be enacted.
