Moose Creek Complex (IDNCF)

Wildfire Status:

The Moose Creek Complex, currently active, consists of four lightning-caused wildfires: the Wye Fire, Halfway Fire, Monument Fire, and Log Fire. The Wye Fire, detected on July 25, 2024, has expanded to approximately 12,857 acres and is burning primarily within a 2015 fire scar, located about four and a half miles northwest of Freeman Peak. The Halfway Fire, detected on August 25, 2024, spans around 1,365 acres, while the Monument Fire, detected on August 19, 2024, is approximately 543 acres. The Log Fire is notably smaller at about 5 acres.

Fire agencies are actively responding to the Moose Creek Complex, with 13 personnel currently on the ground. Efforts are focused on structure protection for key locations, including the East Moose Bridge, Moose Creek Ranger Station, and Shissler Peak Lookout. Fire behavior has been moderate to high at times, and the situation is expected to intensify with forecasted hotter and drier weather, prompting ongoing vigilance from firefighting teams.

As of now, multiple trail closures are in effect in and around the Moose Creek Complex area to ensure public safety. Smoke from the fires may drift eastward, potentially impacting the Bitterroot Valley, and residents are advised to stay informed about local air quality conditions. The estimated containment date for the complex has been set for December 31, 2024, highlighting the long-term commitment required to manage this complex wildfire scenario.
