Bucktail Fire (COUPD)

Wildfire Status:

The Bucktail Fire, located approximately 6.5 miles northeast of Nucla, Colorado, has reached a current size of 7,202 acres, with 83% of its perimeter contained as of August 15, 2024. Initially reported on August 1, the fire spread rapidly, fueled by pinyon pine, juniper, and oak brush, and demonstrated extreme fire behavior early on. Fortunately, there are no structures threatened, and no evacuations are currently in effect, allowing for a more focused response from firefighting agencies.

Firefighting efforts have been robust, involving multiple resources during the initial attack, including eleven aircraft—comprising both large air tankers and helicopters—along with several fire engines and a hand crew. These resources have been strategically deployed to combat the fire's aggressive spread, particularly in challenging terrain. As the situation has evolved, the Type 3 incident command has transitioned to a local Type 4 organization, indicating a shift in management as containment efforts progress.

Currently, there are road and area closures in place due to the fire, and while the immediate threat to structures remains low, active monitoring and firefighting operations continue. Weather conditions affecting the fire's behavior have not been specified, but the ongoing efforts and resource allocation suggest that fire agencies are prepared for any changes in the situation. The estimated date for full containment is projected for September 30, 2024, signifying ongoing vigilance and dedication from firefighting teams in the region.
