Bucktail Fire (COUPD)

Wildfire Status:

The Bucktail Fire, which ignited on August 1, 2024, near Nucla, Colorado, has rapidly grown to an estimated size of 7,202 acres and is currently 83% contained. Initially reported at 111 acres by 1:15 p.m. on the day of the outbreak, the fire's aggressive spread was fueled by pinyon pine, juniper, and oak brush in the area. Fire behavior at the onset was classified as extreme due to favorable conditions such as slope and available fuel. Thankfully, there are no structures currently threatened, and no evacuations have been mandated.

Firefighting efforts have been robust, with a significant response from multiple agencies. The initial attack featured eleven aircraft, including one very large and four large air tankers, as well as two helicopters. Ground resources included five engines from various local fire departments, a 16-person hand crew, and heavy equipment such as dozers. As operational demands have shifted, command of the incident transitioned from a Type 3 to a local Type 4 organization on August 14, 2024.

Weather conditions continue to play a critical role in firefighting efforts. As of the most recent updates, the area is experiencing typical summer conditions, which could influence fire behavior and containment strategies. Road and area closures remain in effect to ensure the safety of both firefighters and the public, and updates on these restrictions are available through official channels.
