Bucktail Fire (COUPD)

Wildfire Status:

The Bucktail Fire, which ignited on August 1, 2024, is currently active and has grown to a size of approximately 7,202 acres. As of August 15, the fire is 83% contained. The blaze began on private land in the Bucktail drainage, about 6.5 miles northeast of Nucla, Colorado, and quickly spread to adjacent Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) lands. The fire is primarily burning through pinyon pine, juniper, and oak brush, exhibiting extreme fire behavior influenced by the steep terrain and abundant fuel.

Firefighting efforts have been robust, with a diverse range of resources deployed. Initial response included eleven aircraft (comprised of one very large air tanker, four large air tankers, and four single-engine air tankers), two helicopters, five engines, and a hand crew of 16 individuals. Heavy equipment, including dozers from Montrose County, has also been utilized to contain the fire's perimeter. Currently, 112 personnel are assigned to manage the incident, reflecting a significant commitment to controlling the fire's spread.

Weather conditions have been a critical factor in the fire's behavior and firefighting efforts. While specific current weather data is not detailed, the area has experienced conditions that have historically contributed to rapid fire spread. Due to the ongoing situation, there are road and area closures in effect to ensure public safety. Fortunately, no structures are currently threatened, and no evacuations have been ordered. The incident command structure has transitioned from a Type 3 to a local Type 4 organization as containment efforts continue.
