Interlaken Fire (COPSF)

Wildfire Status:

The Interlaken Fire, which was reported on June 11, 2024, has reached a significant milestone, being declared 100% contained as of June 24, 2024. This wildfire is located within the Pike San Isabel National Forest Cimarron and Comanche Grasslands, approximately 7 miles south-southwest of Leadville, Colorado. The incident, initially managed by a Type 3 Incident Management Team, has transitioned to a local Type 4 organization. Currently, the fire has burned approximately 704 acres, primarily affecting high elevation lodgepole forests characterized by heavy dead and down timber due to insect and disease mortality.

In response to the fire, the U.S. Forest Service issued a closure order for the affected area, effective June 15, 2024, restricting access to Forest Service lands in the vicinity of the fire. As of the morning of June 25, 2024, the fire management strategy has shifted to reflect the containment status, with personnel being adjusted accordingly. As of the latest update on June 26, 2024, there are around 30 personnel on the ground, focused on ensuring the fire is fully controlled and monitored for any potential flare-ups.
