Wildfire Status:

The Gold Complex, currently active in Portola, California, encompasses two fires known as the Mill Fire and the Smith Fire. Discovered on July 22, 2024, after a lightning strike, the complex has burned a total of 3,007 acres. As of August 5, 2024, the fire is 98% contained, with a full-suppression strategy implemented by the California Complex Interagency Incident Management Team 10 since July 24, transitioning to a local Type 3 Team on August 7. Fire behavior has been minimal recently, characterized by smoldering and creeping, and crews are focusing on mop-up operations to prevent any further spread.

Current fire response efforts include 146 personnel actively working on the fire lines, which are undergoing strengthening and mop-up procedures. The weather has moderated with cooler temperatures and lighter winds, contributing to the reduced fire activity. However, a warming and drying trend is anticipated over the next few days, which could influence fuel moisture levels and fire behavior. The fuels involved in the fire consist of timber, brush, and a heavy duff layer, all of which are in extremely dry conditions, with ERCs (Energy Release Components) at the 97th percentile.

Looking ahead, fire management teams plan to continue suppression repair and mop-up actions across all divisions of the fire. The estimated date for full containment is projected for August 6, 2024, as crews work diligently to mitigate any risks of flare-ups or escape from controlled lines. For ongoing updates, live map-based information and evacuation details can be accessed through official channels, including the Plumas County Sheriff's Office and the Sierra County Sheriff's Office.
