Wildfire Status:

The 2024 Lake Fire, located in the Los Padres National Forest, remains an active wildfire, with approximately 90% of its perimeter contained. The fire has been classified as a Full Suppression Fire, and crews are currently engaged in suppression repair efforts aimed at restoring the affected area to its pre-fire conditions. This includes constructing water bars on fire lines to mitigate soil erosion and prevent contamination of waterways from potential debris flows. Heavy equipment is being utilized to reposition dirt and vegetation back over the lines, and these restoration efforts are expected to continue for several weeks.

A type 3 incident management team from the Los Padres National Forest has taken command of the fire response. Although the fire initially posed a significant threat to nearby communities, including Santa Ynez and Los Olivos, all evacuation orders and warnings were lifted on July 23. Nevertheless, an area closure remains in effect for the lands impacted by the fire, with restrictions on access to roads, trails, and recreational areas within the closure zone, which will last until at least August 18, 2024. Local residents are advised to remain cautious when returning home as emergency personnel continue their work in the area.

Weather conditions have contributed to the fire's rapid growth since it ignited on July 5, 2024, during a prolonged heat wave affecting the West Coast. As firefighters continue their suppression and repair efforts, the focus remains on ensuring public safety and preventing further fire-related hazards. Visitors to the Los Padres National Forest are subject to strict fire restrictions, including prohibitions on open and campfires outside designated areas, to reduce the risk of new ignitions during this high-risk period.
