Park Fire (CALNF)

Wildfire Status:

As of October 16, 2024, the Park Fire, which ignited on July 24, 2024, near Bidwell Municipal Park in Chico, California, has burned an extensive area of 429,603 acres, primarily affecting the Ishi Wilderness and extending into both the Lassen National Forest and various private, state, and federal lands. The fire experienced rapid spread and extreme behavior in its early stages but is now reported to be fully contained, with 100% of its perimeter secured. While the fire is considered contained, residual smoldering and isolated heat sources may persist, with no significant active combustion expected.

Firefighting efforts are currently focused on suppression repair, which is being managed by the National Incident Management Organization Team 3 for the Lassen National Forest. This includes ongoing resource protection, hazard tree mitigation, and monitoring to ensure public safety in the surrounding areas. The Lassen National Forest continues to patrol the fire area, and there are no anticipated fire spread activities in the immediate future. The expected containment for the fire was originally set for September 30, 2024, and the fire remains under careful observation as it transitions to a patrol status.

Weather conditions have played a crucial role in the fire's behavior and subsequent management. Following a recent precipitation event, the fuels in the area have stabilized, leading to a decrease in fire activity. The vegetation types involved in the fire include dense grasses, manzanita, oak brush, and mixed conifer forests, which are now more receptive to drying conditions but are not expected to support significant fire spread.
