Wildfire Status:
The Horse Fire, located on the Cave Creek Ranger District in Arizona, has reached a size of 512 acres and is currently 100% contained. Fire crews have been actively engaged since the fire's onset on May 5, 2024, at approximately 4 PM. The response has involved a considerable number of resources, including four engines and one helicopter, with support from the Mesa and Payson Interagency Hotshot Crews. These teams are focused on protecting critical infrastructure such as the KA Ranch and Horse Dam, as well as nearby Forest Service campgrounds.
In addition to fire suppression efforts, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has provided essential supplies, including food and water, to support those affected by the fire. As of now, approximately 64 personnel are on-site managing the incident, which is characterized by minimal fire activity, primarily consisting of smoldering. Planned actions include continuous monitoring and improvement of fire lines, alongside preparations for potential new fire starts in the region.
Current weather conditions pose some challenges, with gusty winds and low relative humidity expected to persist through the weekend and into the following week. While no significant movement of the fire perimeter is anticipated, increasing wind speeds could elevate the risk of spotting in the coming days. The command for the incident is set to transition back to the local unit on May 13, 2024, as resources are reassigned to address a new fire in the Four Peaks area.
