2024 - West Fire - TNF (AZTNF)

Wildfire Status:

The West Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire, is actively burning four miles northeast of Pine, Arizona, covering approximately 15,074 acres. As of now, the fire is 95% contained, with firefighting efforts focusing on a confine and contain strategy. This approach aims to protect private lands and nearby communities such as Camp Geronimo, Geronimo Estates, and Bray Creek Ranch while reintroducing fire into the ecosystem to reduce hazardous fuels and improve watershed conditions and wildlife habitats. The incident is being managed collaboratively with the Preacher Fire under the leadership of Incident Commander Tadd Fagerud.

Currently, there are 71 personnel engaged in firefighting efforts. The fire behavior remains moderate, with flanking and backing occurring as it consumes available fuels within its established perimeter. Although ignitions have been completed, unburned pockets may still produce smoke. Weather conditions are favorable for firefighting, with plentiful sunshine and near-record high temperatures reaching 91 degrees. Winds are light and variable, which helps control fire spread but requires ongoing monitoring.

Firefighters have been employing a patient approach, strategically waiting for optimal conditions to apply fire in a controlled manner while avoiding ignitions during excessively hot periods. This method not only aids in immediate containment but also contributes to long-term forest health by mitigating future fire risks.
