Flat Fire (XX1002)

Wildfire Status:

The Flat Fire, which ignited on July 15, 2023, south of Agness, Oregon, is currently under active management by the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Incident Management Team (IMT). The fire has consumed approximately 34,242 acres and is 93% contained. Firefighters are employing a full suppression strategy, prioritizing safety for both the public and firefighting personnel. The IMT is collaborating closely with local agencies, including the Coos Forest Protective Association and the Douglas Forest Protective Association, to effectively manage the incident and minimize its impact.

As of the latest reports, the fire behavior has been minimal, characterized by isolated smoldering in protected fuel areas, particularly in old fire scars. Recent weather conditions have contributed to a decrease in fire activity, with cooler temperatures and increased humidity levels. Rain is expected to begin early Sunday morning, with forecasts predicting 0.25 to 0.50 inches of precipitation. This moisture is anticipated to further suppress fire activity, with surface fuels becoming saturated and reducing the potential for flare-ups.

Evacuations in the area have been adjusted, with the Level One Fire Evacuation Zone around the Anvil Fire east of Port Orford being lifted as of October 16, 2023. However, for public safety, the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and the Coos Bay District Bureau of Land Management have issued closure orders for the Flat Fire area. Road conditions remain a concern, and authorities advise against using forest roads as alternate routes. The IMT plans to conclude its last operational period by October 22, 2023, but the situation will continue to be monitored closely due to ongoing weather changes.
