A storm moved through northern Harney County on July 22, 2026, yielding hundreds of positive lightning strikes. The Second Flat Fire was discovered on the afternoon of July 24, 2026. Initial attack resources from the Burns Interagency Fire Zone and the Egypt Fire responded promptly but were unable to contain the fast moving wildfire as it spread over twelve miles in seven hours. Southern Area Team 2 is responsible for management of the fire, along with the Stubble, Crater, Bald Mountain and Jackass Butte fires.
Priorities remain public and firefighter safety, private lands, and critical infrastructure. Firefighters are working the fire as directly as possible to protect these values at risk, using both ground resources and multiple helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.
