Crater Fire has burned 745 acres, burning 33 miles southeast of Hines.

A storm moved through northern Harney County on July 22, 2026, yielding hundreds of positive lightning strikes. The Crater Fire was discovered on the afternoon of July 23, 2026. Initial attack resources from the Burns Interagency Fire Zone, Rangeland Fire Protection Association and the Egypt Fire responded promptly but were unable to contain the fast moving wildfire. Southern Area Team 2 is responsible for management of the fire, along with the Stubble, Second Flats, Bald Mountain and Jackass Butte fires.
Priorities remain public and firefighter safety, private lands, and critical infrastructure. Firefighters are working the fire as directly as possible to protect these values at risk, using both ground resources and multiple helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.
