Wildfire Status:
The Rocky Branch Fire in Luray, Virginia, just north of Shenandoah National Park Headquarters, started on March 20, 2024, after a major wind event. The fire has affected 1,031 acres of land, with 80% of the perimeter contained as of March 28, 2024. The cause of the fire remains undetermined. The incident commander for the fire is Steven Parrish, Bart Kicklighter, and Michael Davis. Currently, there are 40 personnel working on managing the fire.
The fire is primarily smoldering with limited small pockets of smoldering remaining, mostly in stump holes and dead/down snags. The outlook for the next few days indicates that limited fire movement is expected, with some smoldering in heavy fuels anticipated. Trail and road closures are in place, affecting various areas including the Appalachian Trail and Skyline Drive. The weather conditions are a concern, with partly to mostly sunny weather on March 26 and showers likely on March 27, with above-normal temperatures and southerly winds.
