High Lonesome Fire
Wildfire Status:
The High Lonesome Fire, located in Dallam County, Texas, has been actively burning since March 18, 2025. As of now, the fire has grown to encompass approximately 18,000 acres. It originally posed a significant threat as it was active on all flanks, with conditions for growth deemed high. The fire has crossed state lines into Oklahoma, but by March 19, the forward progression of the fire was successfully halted, and it has since been reported as 100% contained.
Fire response efforts have been coordinated under Unified Command, which includes multiple agencies cooperating to manage the situation. As of March 19, crews have been engaged in mapping the fire and conducting mop-up operations to ensure complete control. The incident commander, John Fugitt from the Texas A&M Forest Service, has indicated that full control of the fire is expected by March 24, 2025. Visibility has been severely affected due to dust and smoke, which complicated firefighting efforts initially.
In terms of weather conditions, a Red Flag Warning was in effect prior to the fire's containment, indicating high fire danger due to wind and dry conditions. However, currently, there are no significant weather concerns affecting the fire's status. Fire behavior has diminished to minimal, with only smoldering flames observed at this time, allowing for a more manageable situation for firefighting personnel.
