Double S Fire (TXTXS)

Wildfire Status:

The Double S Fire, located in Hutchinson County, Texas, has been a significant concern since it was reported on March 18, 2025. The Texas A&M Forest Service received a request for assistance at approximately 7:00 PM, as the fire displayed extreme behavior. Firefighters worked diligently to establish containment lines and protect nearby structures. As of March 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM, crews successfully completed a perimeter line around the fire, achieving 95% containment. Currently, the fire has burned approximately 454 acres, with minimal active fire behavior characterized by creeping and smoldering.

Fire agencies have been proactive in their response, deploying 38 personnel to manage the situation. They are conducting patrols and mopping up hot spots while ensuring that containment lines are reinforced. Although evacuations were implemented on March 18, they have since been lifted. However, Highway 136 remains closed due to visibility issues caused by smoke from the wildfire. The incident commander, Mark Nicoletti from the Texas A&M Forest Service, oversees operations as crews continue their efforts to secure the area.

Weather conditions are posing some challenges for firefighters. While light westerly winds are expected to increase to 15-20 mph from the southwest, relative humidity levels are critically low, hovering around 9 percent. This dry atmosphere, coupled with potential fluctuations in wind speed, raises concerns for flare-ups. Crews will remain vigilant, monitoring the fire's activity and patrolling for hotspots, especially as weather conditions may shift later in the evening. The forecast suggests a dry recovery for relative humidity, which could complicate firefighting efforts. Overall, the response has been effective, and with continued vigilance, the fire may be fully contained by March 22, 2025.
