Calaveras Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Calaveras Fire, which ignited on March 4th near Elmdorf, Texas, is currently 90% contained after burning approximately 284 acres. The fire was initially tackled by local fire departments before the Texas A&M Forest Service was summoned for additional support, including firefighters and heavy equipment. As of now, crews are actively constructing containment lines to secure the perimeter of the fire and are focused on protecting nearby structures from potential damage.
The response to the wildfire has been complicated by extreme weather conditions, characterized by high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. These factors have created an environment conducive to rapid fire growth and made control efforts more challenging. The weather has been particularly severe, with westerly winds sustained at 25 to 30 mph and gusts reaching up to 50 mph, which could exacerbate the fire's spread. Fire crews are working diligently under these conditions to safeguard the public and structures in the vicinity.
Evacuations were initially mandated along Old Corpus Christi Road to ensure public safety while allowing firefighters to operate more effectively. The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is still under investigation. As the incident continues, fire agencies remain vigilant, monitoring weather conditions and adjusting their strategies to mitigate any further risks posed by the fire.
