2025-Route 13 Fire-SDCRA (SDCRA)

Wildfire Status:

As of March 20, 2025, the Route 13 Fire on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation has reached 100% containment after a challenging ten-day battle with the blaze. The fire initially ignited on March 10, 2025, when two separate fires merged along BIA Route 13, with a third fire reported shortly thereafter. Due to the fire's behavior and prevailing conditions, evacuations were ordered for the Takini School and surrounding community. Fire suppression efforts were complicated by dry heavy fuels, including trees, logs, and shrubs, which were exacerbated by moderate drought conditions and frequent wind shifts that rekindled hotspots.

Firefighting agencies responded promptly, deploying a range of resources including a Type 3 helicopter and South Dakota National Guard Type 1 Blackhawk helicopters. These aerial units played a crucial role in managing the fire, with the SDNG helicopters dropping approximately 26,000 gallons of water to combat the flames. The fire was marked by critical fire weather conditions, including periods of high winds that reduced visibility and tested the resilience of firelines throughout the duration of the incident.

In addition to aerial support, local fire departments provided vital ground assistance. The Enning Volunteer Fire Department led the initial response, joined by resources from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Wildland Fire, and numerous volunteer fire departments from surrounding areas. At one point, a total of 135 personnel were involved in the firefighting efforts, showcasing a strong collaborative response from the community and firefighting agencies. A Burned Area Emergency Response assessment is currently underway to evaluate future needs and recovery efforts in the affected areas.
