2025-Route 13 Fire-SDCRA (SDCRA)

Wildfire Status:

As of March 20, 2025, the Route 13 Fire, which is located along Cherry Creek on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, has achieved 100% containment. This fire originated from two separate reports on March 10, which merged into a single incident that later incorporated a third fire, the Northside Fire. The situation prompted the evacuation of Takini School and the surrounding community due to aggressive fire behavior and shifting winds that complicated firefighting efforts. The fire was exacerbated by dry heavy fuels and moderate drought conditions, which resulted in rekindling of hot spots even after initial suppression efforts.

Firefighting operations were robust, involving the support of multiple fire departments, including the Enning Volunteer Fire Department, BIA Wildland Fire resources, and several regional volunteer fire departments. At peak response, over 135 personnel were documented on the ground. A combination of aerial resources, such as a Type 3 Helicopter and two Type 1 Blackhawk Helicopters from the South Dakota National Guard, were utilized to monitor the fire and extinguish hot spots, with a significant amount of water dropped to mitigate flare-ups.

The weather conditions during the firefighting efforts were challenging, characterized by critical fire weather and frequent wind shifts, which resulted in reduced visibility and complicated fireline management. Overall, the collaborative response from local and state fire agencies, alongside the support from the community, played a crucial role in managing the situation and achieving containment. A Burned Area Emergency Response assessment is now underway to evaluate the impact and determine future recovery needs.
