2025-Route 13 Fire-SDCRA (SDCRA)

Wildfire Status:

The Route 13 Fire, which began on March 10, 2025, on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, has been fully contained as of March 20, 2025. Initially, two separate fires merged into the Route 13 Fire, with a third fire reported shortly after. Due to the fire's behavior and escalating conditions, evacuations were ordered for the Takini School and the surrounding community. The suppression efforts faced challenges from dry and heavy fuels, exacerbated by moderate drought conditions and shifting winds that frequently rekindled hot spots, complicating the firefighting efforts.

Fire agencies, including the Enning Volunteer Fire Department and several other local volunteer fire departments, were instrumental in the initial response. The Bureau of Indian Affairs Wildland Fire resources also played a vital role. The South Dakota National Guard provided aerial support using Type 1 Blackhawk helicopters, which dropped approximately 26,000 gallons of water to mitigate flare-ups. In total, the incident involved over 135 personnel at one point, showcasing a coordinated response among multiple agencies.

As of the last update, a Burned Area Emergency Response assessment is underway, looking to address future needs in the affected areas. The incident command team has expressed gratitude to the local communities for their support throughout the firefighting operations. Continuous monitoring will be essential to ensure that any remaining hot spots are managed effectively and to evaluate any long-term impacts from the fire on the landscape and community.
