2025-Route 13 Fire-SDCRA (SDCRA)

Wildfire Status:

As of March 20, 2025, the Route 13 Fire, which ignited on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, has reached 100% containment. The incident began earlier in the month, when two fires reported along BIA Route 13 merged, leading to the evacuation of Takini School and the surrounding community. The fire's behavior was exacerbated by dry fuels from moderate drought conditions, as well as shifting winds that posed challenges for containment efforts. These conditions resulted in rekindling of hot spots, complicating firefighting operations.

The response to the Route 13 Fire involved significant resources, including a Type 3 helicopter and Blackhawk helicopters from the South Dakota National Guard, which collectively dropped approximately 26,000 gallons of water on the fire. Initial response teams were supported by volunteer fire departments from nearby communities, with at least 135 personnel engaged at various points during the incident. Fire agencies implemented a Burned Area Emergency Response assessment to evaluate future recovery needs.

Throughout the firefighting efforts, the incident command expressed gratitude for the support from the Takini community and surrounding areas. The operation faced challenges due to high winds and reduced visibility, but the collaborative efforts of multiple fire departments and agencies ultimately led to the successful containment of the fire.
