Wildfire Status:

The Badland Complex wildfire, located east of Interstate 84 between Durkee and Richland, Oregon, has been active since July 22, 2024. As of August 10, 2024, the fire has burned approximately 54,563 acres and is reported to be 99% contained. The incident consists of multiple fires, with three of them having been consumed by the Thompson fire. The Rocky Mountain Area Complex Incident Management Team Two is currently managing the incident.

In response to the wildfire, the Baker and Malheur County Sheriffs have implemented evacuation orders at levels 1, 2, and 3 to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas. Currently, there are 31 personnel working on the fire suppression efforts, which include the use of helicopters for water bucket drops. The firefighting teams continue to monitor the situation, focusing on areas where pockets of heat remain, as well as ensuring that fire behavior remains controlled.

Weather conditions have been favorable for firefighting efforts, with fuel moistures being relatively low; however, local sagebrush fuel moistures are around 110%. Fire behavior has been minimal, with instances of creeping and single tree torching reported. Suppression actions have successfully reduced fire activity, and the estimated containment date is projected for August 10, 2024. As the fire moves towards containment, ongoing assessments will help determine the necessary resources and strategies to fully extinguish the remaining hotspots.
