Little Yamsay Fire (ORFWF)

Wildfire Status:

The Little Yamsay Fire, currently active in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, has burned approximately 6,340 acres since its ignition, which was caused by lightning. This wildfire is part of a planned series of controlled burns intended to restore forest health and reduce hazardous fuel loads in the area. The fire management team, utilizing a Type 3 Incident Management Team, is executing a three-phase firing operation that aims to enhance the landscape by reducing the risk of future catastrophic wildfires and promoting ecological benefits such as improved wildlife habitat and forest resilience.

As of May 13, 2024, the first three phases of the firing operations have been completed, successfully expanding the fire's footprint. The team is now assessing conditions for a potential fourth phase, which could increase the treated area by an additional 815 acres. The prescribed fire strategy aims to create a buffer against future wildfires, emulating successful wildfire management from previous incidents, such as the Bootleg Fire. The careful reintroduction of fire into the ecosystem is expected to help mitigate the spread of pests and diseases, while also recycling nutrients and improving soil health.

Weather conditions have been favorable for the operation, allowing for controlled burns to proceed safely. The fire is being monitored closely, with aerial assessments confirming that many large conifers remain healthy and green.
