Red Fire (ORDEF)

Wildfire Status:

The Red Fire, located in the Diamond Peak Wilderness approximately 16 miles northwest of Crescent, Oregon, has shown signs of decreased activity due to moderating weather conditions. As of October 21, 2024, the fire has burned approximately 3,060 acres, with 30% of its perimeter contained. The incident command was recently transitioned from a Type 3 to a Type 4 organization, indicating a reduction in fire intensity and complexity. Currently, there are 46 personnel involved in firefighting efforts, which include suppression strategies focused on controlling the remaining active areas of the fire.

The weather conditions have contributed to the decrease in fire activity, with minimal significant events reported in the last updates, primarily consisting of smoldering and creeping behavior. The fuels involved in the fire consist primarily of timber litter and understory, including species like Douglas fir, cedar, and mountain hemlock. The fire area is characterized by a mix of large trees and managed timber stands, which have favorable moisture levels, reducing the potential for rapid spread.

Despite the current containment progress, a temporary emergency closure order is in effect for the area surrounding the fire.
