Wildfire Status:

The Boneyard Fire, ignited by lightning on July 17, 2024, is currently burning in extremely dry fuels north of Monument, Oregon. The fire has consumed 49,716 acres and is only 3% contained as of July 25, 2024. A total of 592 personnel are working on the fire, facing extreme fire behavior including group torching, uphill runs, and single tree torching. The fire is making fast runs fueled by winds in lighter fuel loads, creating spotting issues.

The current weather conditions continue to pose challenges for firefighters, with hotter temperatures, low humidity, and the development of showers and thunderstorms expected. There is a high confidence in showers and thunderstorms in the fire zone, with the possibility of heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds. The fire is expected to continue exhibiting extreme behavior in the coming days, with rapid spread towards the south encroaching the town of Monument.

Planned actions include scouting for potential line locations, constructing containment lines, conducting burnout operations, and patrolling residential areas. The projected incident activity indicates that the fire will continue to expand towards the south, potentially encroaching on the town of Monument and merging with other fires in the vicinity. Incoming cold fronts with gusty and erratic winds are expected to further challenge containment efforts.
