Wildfire Status:

As of April 13, 2025, the wildfire located west of Wakpala, South Dakota, on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation has been fully contained, with 100% of its perimeter secured. This fire, reported on March 13, 2025, resulted in damage to two structures and has consumed approximately 350 acres. The incident was managed by a Type 4 Incident Command team from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, along with support from local Volunteer Fire Departments.

Despite the containment, there are ongoing concerns regarding the fire's aftermath, particularly due to heavy fuels that remain smoldering. The Incident Command has expressed worry about high winds that could shift unexpectedly, potentially reigniting any remaining hot spots. While there is some moisture in the area, elevated temperatures and winds are expected to evaporate this moisture quickly, which could contribute to re-ignition risks.

Current weather conditions have been marked by strong winds and elevated fire danger. Fire agencies remain vigilant, monitoring the situation closely to ensure that any remaining threats are addressed promptly.
