Wildfire Status:

As of April 13, 2025, the wildfire west of Wakpala, South Dakota, on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, has been reported to have a total size of 350 acres. The fire was first reported on March 13, 2025, and has caused damage to two structures. Fortunately, the fire is now fully contained, with 100% of the perimeter secured. However, concerns remain regarding heavy fuels that are still smoldering, which could pose risks if not monitored closely.

The response to the fire has involved the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and local Volunteer Fire Departments, who have been actively engaged in firefighting efforts. The Incident Command Team, led by a Type 4 Incident Commander, continues to oversee the situation, ensuring that any potential threats from residual smoldering fuels are addressed. Currently, there are no personnel reported on the ground actively fighting the fire, indicating that the immediate danger has been mitigated.

Weather conditions in the area have contributed to the challenges faced by firefighting teams. There have been reports of strong winds with shifts and elevated fire danger, which can complicate containment efforts. Although there is some moisture in the area, the higher temperatures and winds are expected to evaporate any remaining moisture, potentially exacerbating the situation if conditions worsen. The Incident Command remains vigilant, monitoring the weather closely to anticipate any changes that could affect the stability of the fire's containment.
