Wildfire Status:

As of March 18, 2025, a wildfire continues to be active west of Wakpala, South Dakota, on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The fire, reported on March 13, has affected 350 acres and is currently 90% contained. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and local volunteer fire departments are engaged in firefighting efforts. Unfortunately, two structures have been damaged due to the blaze. Although there has been some moisture in the area, concerns remain regarding heavy fuels still smoldering and the potential for rekindling.

Fire agencies are focused on mop-up operations and securing the fire perimeter, especially in light of the forecasted high winds which could shift and exacerbate the situation. There are currently 19 personnel actively fighting the fire, and the Incident Commander is from the Type 4 Incident Command stationed at the Standing Rock Agency. The fire is classified as human-caused, and the operational strategies include patrolling for potential flare-ups due to observed drought conditions in the region.

Weather conditions are a critical factor in the ongoing firefighting efforts. Strong winds with shifting patterns are predicted for the week, posing a significant risk to containment efforts. The Incident Command is aware of these challenges and is taking necessary precautions to prevent further escalation of the fire. Continued monitoring and adjustment of firefighting strategies will be essential as conditions evolve.
