2025 Hwy 12 MM 176 - NDSRA (NDSRA)

Wildfire Status:

As of March 15, 2025, an active wildfire is burning west of Wakpala, South Dakota, on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The fire, reported on March 13 at 1510 hours Central Time, has affected approximately 350 acres, damaging two structures in the vicinity. Currently, the fire's perimeter is reported to be fully contained at 100%, indicating that no active flames are present, although heavy fuels are still smoldering in some areas.

Fire response efforts involve both the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and local volunteer fire departments. Despite the containment status, there remain concerns from Incident Command about potential flare-ups due to high winds and shifting weather patterns. While there is some moisture present in the area, rising temperatures and wind conditions are expected to evaporate any remaining moisture, which could exacerbate fire risks.

Weather conditions are critical to ongoing firefighting efforts, with strong winds noted as a significant concern, contributing to elevated fire danger. The Incident Command is monitoring these conditions closely to prevent any resurgence of the fire. Fortunately, as of the latest update, there are no personnel actively engaged on the ground, suggesting that fire agencies are currently in a monitoring phase following successful containment.
