Short Draw Fire (MTMTS)

Wildfire Status:

The Short Draw Fire, located approximately 30 miles north of Gillette, Wyoming, has reached a current size of 34,557 acres and is reported to be 92% contained as of September 19, 2024. Recent rainfall of 0.29 inches has aided suppression efforts by extinguishing embers and dampening heat sources. However, the wet conditions have also created challenges for crews, making access to certain areas of the fire perimeter difficult. As the weather dries, firefighting crews are focusing on patrolling, monitoring, and mopping up residual heat within the fire’s interior, extending their efforts by an additional 200 feet into the perimeter to enhance containment.

Fire management teams are actively engaged in the rehabilitation of contingency lines that were constructed previously. This restoration work is essential to mitigating long-term environmental impacts and facilitating the return of the landscape to its natural state. The current response includes a total of 103 personnel who are executing planned actions to complete containment and restore areas affected by the fire. Resources have been redirected to address other priority incidents, but ongoing efforts will continue until the fire is declared fully contained.

Weather conditions are expected to pose some challenges, with strong winds predicted to reach up to 40 mph in the fire area, although no additional spread is anticipated. As conditions gradually stabilize with less wind and warming, crews will monitor the situation closely. Fire managers aim to have the fire fully contained by the estimated date of September 20, 2024, through continued suppression activities and restoration efforts.
