Short Draw Fire (MTMTS)

Wildfire Status:

The Short Draw Fire, located approximately 30 miles north of Gillette, Wyoming, has reached full containment as of September 20, 2024. The fire has burned a total of 34,557 acres, with a mix of timber, grass, sagebrush, and understory fuels involved. Currently, there are 80 personnel managing the aftermath of the fire, which has transitioned to a minimal and smoldering state. The incident will be handed over to local authorities in Powder River and Campbell Counties for ongoing monitoring and management starting September 21, 2024.

Firefighting efforts have been led by David Hamilton’s DNRC County Assist Team, which has effectively brought the fire under control. The command structure is now shifting back to the local counties, ensuring that the fire remains monitored as it moves into a recovery phase. Fire agencies utilized various resources, including aerial support, to combat the blaze effectively.

As for the weather conditions, there are currently no specific weather concerns reported that would threaten the already contained fire. The successful containment and management of the Short Draw Fire reflect the coordinated efforts of multiple fire agencies and the favorable weather conditions that have aided their operations. The situation remains stable as the focus shifts from active firefighting to monitoring and recovery efforts in the affected areas.
