2024 Gwen Fire (IDIDS)

Wildfire Status:

The 2024 Gwen Fire, located approximately five miles east of Lapwai, Idaho, has spread over 28,820 acres since it ignited on July 24, 2024, following a lightning strike. The fire incident has been managed by the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3, which took command on July 28. As of August 3, the fire is reported to be 90% contained, with minimal active fire behavior observed. However, the fire has resulted in the loss of multiple structures, including residences and commercial buildings, prompting ongoing assessments to determine the full extent of the damage.

In response to the fire, significant firefighting efforts have been deployed, with a total personnel count of 194 currently working on the scene. Planned operations for the upcoming days include mopping up, securing the fire's edge, and monitoring the fire line with ground resources to prevent further spread. Road closures in the area have been lifted, and evacuation orders have been downgraded to a Level 1 "Ready Status", indicating that residents should remain prepared.

Weather conditions are currently a mixed bag for firefighting efforts. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect, with temperatures expected to remain high through the weekend. However, light to moderate breezes may assist in controlling the fire. There is a potential for increased moisture and thunderstorms starting Saturday night, which could bring both relief and additional hazards such as lightning and gusty winds.
