Moon Fire (CAANF)

Wildfire Status:

The Moon Fire, which ignited on August 13, 2024, has been successfully contained as of August 18, 2024. The fire, located in the Angeles National Forest near San Gabriel Canyon Road, reached a size of 15 acres during its active period. Initially, the fire was reported to be 75% contained by the evening of its outbreak, with aggressive firefighting efforts leading to rapid containment progress. By August 14, containment was reported at 80%, and ultimately, the fire reached 100% containment just days later.

Fire agencies, including the Angeles National Forest and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, responded quickly to the incident. Their efforts were bolstered by an initial air attack, which was essential in preventing the fire from spreading further. As a result of their actions, forward fire progress was halted, and all aircraft were released from the scene once the situation stabilized. However, evacuation orders were in place for the Coldbrook Creek area, which were lifted following the fire's containment.

In terms of road closures, the California Highway Patrol had temporarily closed State Route 39 from base to East Fork as a precautionary measure during the firefighting efforts. As of August 14, these closures began to ease, including the reopening of Coldbrook Campground.
