2025-Buffalo Fire (SDCRA)

Wildfire Status:

The 2025 Buffalo Fire, located approximately two miles northwest of Marksville, South Dakota, has been actively managed since it was reported on April 11, 2025. The fire was contained at BIA Route 7 and has burned a total of 611 acres, primarily in grassland with pockets of shrubs and sage. As of the latest reports, the fire is 100% contained, but challenges remain due to shifting winds that have exposed hot spots along the fire's perimeter.

Fire agencies, including the Gettysburg Volunteer Fire Department and BIA Wildland Fire Resources, have been engaged in the response efforts, supported by additional volunteer fire departments from Dupree, Trail City, Timber Lake, and Eagle Butte. The Incident Command has been proactive in utilizing aviation resources, specifically a Single Engine Air Tanker, to reinforce containment lines and address any potential rekindling. Crews continue to patrol and mop up within a designated area to ensure that the fire does not reignite, particularly given the dry conditions and high fire danger forecasted.

Current weather conditions pose a significant risk to fire management efforts. Strong northwesterly winds are expected to reach sustained speeds of up to 30 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 45 mph. This weather pattern exacerbates the already very high grassland fire danger, necessitating ongoing vigilance in patrolling the perimeter and securing containment lines. Fire officials emphasize the importance of monitoring old burn sites and maintaining equipment to prevent sparks, as rekindling is a real concern in the current drought conditions.
