Stockade Canyon Fire (NVWID)

Wildfire Status:

The Stockade Canyon Fire, which ignited on July 3, 2024, approximately 19 miles northwest of Gerlach in Washoe County, Nevada, currently spans 18,212 acres with 80% of its perimeter contained. The fire behavior is characterized by active single tree torching, creeping, and backing within interior pockets of juniper and sage. Firefighting efforts are focused on minimizing the impact on sage grouse habitats and protecting cultural and historic resources within the area while preventing the fire from spreading into adjacent jurisdictions and populated areas.

Fire response teams, led by Nevada Team 2 with Incident Commander Brian Kitchen, consist of 96 personnel. Their planned actions include using Minimal Impacts By Suppression (MIST) tactics to protect green islands and wildlife habitats, while continuing to secure control lines on the north flank. Crews are also engaged in mopping up operations along the south, west, and east flanks to eliminate any remaining heat within the containment lines.

Weather conditions are presenting challenges due to a dry air mass and poor overnight recoveries. Afternoon west-southwest winds are expected to gust between 25-30 mph, contributing to the potential for fire spread, particularly in green islands. However, a cooling trend is expected to start on Sunday, which should improve overnight relative humidity recoveries. Firefighting resources currently deployed include multiple Type 2 and Type 3 crews, helicopters, and various engine types to support ongoing suppression efforts.
