Blue Front Fire (NMLNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Blue Front Fire, detected on October 28, 2024, is currently active in the Lincoln National Forest, approximately 4 miles west of Alto and 9 miles northwest of Ruidoso. Spanning an area of 323 acres, the fire is burning within the Blue 2 wildfire footprint in the White Mountain Wilderness. Despite its size, the fire has reached 100% perimeter containment as firefighters have implemented full suppression tactics, including fireline construction and extinguishing hot spots along the fire's edges. Currently, there are seven personnel on the scene, with support from the Smokey Bear and Sacramento Hotshots, as well as air support from a Type 1 helicopter and lead plane.

The firefighting efforts have been challenged by the terrain, which is rough and remote, and the presence of heavy dead and down timber in the area. Fortunately, there are no evacuations ordered at this time, although homes in the Bonito Lake area remain on a 'ready' status, meaning residents should be prepared to evacuate if conditions change. Emergency management has advised residents to stay alert for further announcements and has encouraged them to sign up for text notifications for timely updates.

Weather conditions are currently a concern, with unseasonably warm temperatures and high winds complicating firefighting strategies. Southwest winds are blowing at 20-26 mph, with gusts exceeding 46 mph, which could increase the fire's behavior. However, forecasts indicate colder temperatures and the potential for snow in higher elevations, which may help mitigate the fire's activity moving forward. Overall, the situation remains fluid, and fire agencies continue to monitor and respond to any changes in the fire's behavior and the surrounding conditions.
