Blue Front Fire (NMLNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Blue Front Fire, detected on October 28, 2024, is currently burning in the Lincoln National Forest, approximately 4 miles west of Alto and 9 miles northwest of Ruidoso. The fire has spread to an area of 323 acres and is situated within the Blue 2 wildfire footprint in the White Mountain Wilderness. As of now, the fire is fully contained, with 100% of its perimeter secured. Firefighting efforts have been challenged by the rough and remote terrain, heavy dead and down timber, and unseasonably warm weather coupled with high winds.

Fire agencies, including Smokey Bear and Sacramento Hotshots, have been actively engaged in full-suppression tactics. They are focusing on fireline construction, extinguishing hot spots along the fire edges, and monitoring the situation. Currently, there are seven personnel assigned to the incident, and a Type 1 helicopter along with lead planes have been deployed to assist in the firefighting efforts. Despite the difficult conditions, minimal fire behavior has been observed.

Weather conditions have been a significant factor in the firefighting strategy. Southwest winds are blowing at speeds of 20 to 26 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. However, a change in the weather is anticipated, with colder temperatures and the possibility of snow at higher elevations, which may help to suppress further fire activity. At this moment, there are no evacuation orders in place, but homes in the Bonito Lake area remain on a 'ready' status, prompting residents to stay alert for potential emergency announcements.
