Black Swamp Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Black Swamp Fire, located in Jones County, North Carolina, has been successfully contained as of May 29, 2025. The fire, which burned a total of 950 acres, was managed by the USDA Forest Service in collaboration with several partner agencies, including the North Carolina Forest Service and the National Park Service. The containment was achieved through the strategic use of a system of dams, pumps, and canals that created a submerged perimeter around the fire, effectively preventing its spread.
Fire response teams are now focused on rehabilitation efforts, including repairs to roads that were damaged during the suppression operations. Despite the fire being fully contained, some areas remain closed to the public, including Black Swamp Road and multiple recreational sites in the vicinity. The closures are in place to ensure the safety of crews working on the site and to facilitate ongoing recovery operations.
The wildfire was characterized by smoldering, flanking, creeping, and isolated torching behavior. Although the cause of the fire remains undetermined, it was first reported on April 27, 2025. Current weather conditions and specific fuel types in the area, primarily chaparral and Southern Rough, contributed to the fire's behavior during its active phase. Moving forward, fire management teams will continue to monitor the area to ensure that the fire stays contained and to address any lingering hazards.
