Wildfire Status:
The Windy Mesa Fire, located approximately 7 miles east of Wikieup, AZ, was discovered on July 22 on Neale Mesa. The fire has consumed 824 acres of desert grass and brush, with 75% of the perimeter contained. The current response includes 45 personnel working on the fire. Firefighters are facing challenges due to remote rough and rugged terrain, strong gusty winds, and the potential for lightning strikes from passing thunderstorms. The managing agency with operational control is the BLM Colorado River District. As of the latest update on July 24, there has been no significant change in acreage overnight, and fire activity remains predominantly on the mesa top. Retardant lines are holding, but may be challenged by strong outflow winds from any thunderstorms.
