Pius Fire (AZASF)

Wildfire Status:

The Pius Fire, located approximately 20 miles northeast of Payson, Arizona, was detected on July 8, 2024, and has since grown to a size of 1,999 acres. As of the latest update on July 15, 2024, the fire is 85% contained, with fire behavior reported as minimal, characterized by some smoldering of interior fuels. The fire is primarily burning through ponderosa pine and mixed timber, along with a grass understory.

In response to the wildfire, the Southwest Area Team 1 assumed command on July 10, implementing a full suppression strategy that includes both direct and indirect tactics aimed at controlling the fire's perimeter completely. Current resources allocated to combat this fire include 257 personnel, two helicopters, 11 engines, six water tenders, and two bulldozers. The incident is under the command of Incident Commander Carl Schwope and Deputy Incident Commander Jason Clawson.

Weather conditions have been relatively stable, contributing to the lower fire behavior observed. The fire's management team continues to focus on ensuring full containment while monitoring for any changes in fire behavior. No specific cause for the fire has been determined at this time.
