Stronghold Fire (AZA3S)

Wildfire Status:

As of May 6, 2025, the Stronghold Fire in the Coronado National Forest is now 85% contained, covering an area of 2,138 acres without any recent change in acreage. The fire ignited on April 28, 2025, near Sunsites-Pearce, approximately 16 miles south of Cochise, and was initially exacerbated by high winds and drought conditions. The fire's progression prompted an aggressive aerial response at the outset, utilizing both Single Engine Air Tankers and Large Air Tankers to control its spread towards nearby homes. Unfortunately, one secondary structure was lost in the blaze, which remains under investigation.

Firefighting efforts have continued to show progress, with favorable weather conditions contributing to reduced fire activity. Cooler temperatures and increased humidity levels have aided containment efforts, allowing the Cochise County Sheriff's Office to lift evacuation notifications in affected areas. Currently, 36 personnel are actively working on the ground, and all temporary closure orders from the Coronado National Forest have been lifted in response to the fire's containment status.

The fire, fueled by grass, brush, oak, and juniper, presents a complex situation for responders; however, the collective efforts of local fire agencies and favorable weather conditions have been pivotal in managing the incident. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels such as the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management for ongoing updates and safety information.
