Stronghold Fire (AZA3S)

Wildfire Status:

As of May 6, 2025, the Stronghold Fire in the Coronado National Forest is 85% contained, with no change in the affected acreage, which stands at 2,138 acres. The fire, which ignited around 11:30 AM on April 28, 2025, near Sunsites-Pearce and 16 miles south of Cochise, was initially fueled by high winds and drought-stricken vegetation. During the early stages, fire crews utilized heavy aircraft, including Single Engine Air Tankers and Large Air Tankers, to mitigate the spread towards nearby homes. Unfortunately, one secondary structure was lost in the blaze, but further damage has been prevented due to ongoing firefighting efforts.

Fire agencies have made significant progress in controlling the fire despite challenging weather conditions. Following a recent increase in containment, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has lifted evacuation orders for some residents and downgraded the GO status to SET in affected areas, allowing residents to return to their homes. Firefighters continue to monitor the situation closely and are working to secure the remaining perimeter of the fire.
