Hot Canyon Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Hot Canyon Fire is actively burning approximately 10 miles northwest of Montello, Nevada, covering an area of 1,800 acres. As of the latest update, the fire is not contained, with 0% of its perimeter secured. The fire is advancing rapidly through dry timber, brush, and grass, exacerbated by sustained winds and the fire’s alignment with the local topography. Group torching has been observed, and crown fire activity is emerging in several areas, complicating suppression efforts and necessitating strategic repositioning of resources for the safety of firefighters.
Currently, there are 91 personnel engaged in firefighting operations, which are focused on full suppression using both direct and indirect tactics. The incident is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and the estimated containment date is set for July 15, 2025. Fire activity is projected to continue increasing, with the potential for an additional 2,000 acres to be consumed within the next 12 hours due to forecasted weather conditions.
Weather concerns are significant, as a red flag warning has been issued for the following day, indicating high winds, elevated temperatures, and low relative humidity. These conditions are expected to lead to extreme fire behavior, posing additional challenges to containment efforts. The fire is anticipated to spread further to the north and east, impacting areas with continuous stands of juniper and pockets of sagebrush, which could intensify the threat to nearby structures and resources.
