Ox Fire (NMCIF)

Wildfire Status:

The Ox Fire, located in the Manzano Mountains south of Ox Canyon in New Mexico's Cibola National Forest, has been reported since March 18, 2025. As of the latest update on March 19, the fire has grown to 4.3 acres and is currently 30% contained. Firefighters are actively engaged in suppression efforts, focusing on securing the perimeter while managing moderate fire behavior observed within the interior. Fortunately, there are no evacuations in place, and no immediate values are threatened by the fire.

Firefighting resources on scene include two U.S. Forest Service engines, a Bureau of Land Management Rio Puerco Module, and additional support from local fire departments. The strategy is full suppression, with teams working diligently to control the flames and prevent further spread. Weather conditions are a significant concern, particularly with forecasted winds from the northwest at 20 mph, gusting up to 30 mph, which could hinder firefighting operations. Light smoke may be visible in nearby areas, and individuals with respiratory issues are advised to take precautions.

As firefighters continue to monitor the situation, they are also addressing the Rona Fire, a smaller incident that was quickly contained at 0.5 acres. Weather for the upcoming days includes sunny conditions with highs around 47 degrees Fahrenheit and a potential fire weather watch that could escalate to Red Flag conditions. The safety of both the firefighters and the public remains a top priority, and the community is urged to avoid the Ox Fire area.
