Rattlesnake Branch (NCNCF)

Wildfire Status:

The Rattlesnake Branch Fire, which ignited on March 26, 2025, near Cruso, North Carolina, has currently affected an area of approximately 1,843 acres. The fire is situated about 11 miles southeast of Waynesville and has extended into the Shining Rock Wilderness Area within the Pisgah National Forest. As of now, 26% of the fire’s perimeter has been contained, with efforts ongoing to secure the remaining areas. Rainfall on March 30 and 31 helped to reduce fire activity, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fire response teams, consisting of about 175 personnel, are actively engaged in containment efforts. Firefighters are focusing on patrolling and mopping up around structures, establishing containment lines using existing roads, and conducting structure assessments. The projected activities include minimal fire activity in the immediate future due to cloud cover and scattered rain. However, there are concerns that warmer temperatures and drying conditions could lead to increased fire behavior in the coming days, particularly as ground fuels become more available for ignition.

Weather conditions are currently helping to suppress the fire, but forecasts indicate a return to drier conditions within the next 24 to 48 hours, which could increase the risk of fire spread. Fire agencies are prepared to adapt their strategies based on these changing conditions. Additionally, a statewide burn ban that was in effect due to hazardous conditions will be lifted on April 2, allowing for more flexibility in fire management strategies across North Carolina.
